Women’s tennis team gets off to good start in Utah tournament

UNLV did not lose a singles match and went 2-1 in doubles play during Wednesday’s first round of action at the 2017 ITA Mountain Region Championships being played at the University of Utah’s George S. Eccles Tennis Center in Salt Lake City.

Three of eight Rebels enjoyed byes in singles, including eighth-seeded and 83rd-ranked Aiwen Zhu.

Otherwise, the UNLV contingent only dropped one set in five singles matches. Mercedes Lopez, Jovana Kenic, Juliet Zhang, En-pei Huang and Izumi Asano all won to advance to the Round of 64 on Thursday.

In doubles, one UNLV duo had a bye. The pairs of Anna Bogoslavets and Samantha Li and Zhang and Asano won and will play in the Round of 32 on Thursday.
