NOVEMBER BRINGS FLURRY OF BIG EVENTS

-

Sports is kind of a like an ocean in Las Vegas. When there’s a wave of big events, it’s like a tsunami.

November is one of those deluge months. Beginning next week it will be all about big events that can dominate Southern Nevada.

The list includes:

Nov. 1-5: Pro Bull Riders championship at T-mobile Arena.

Nov. 2-5: Shriners Open at

TPC Summerlin.

Nov. 10: UNLV football vs. BYU at Sam Boyd Stadium.

Nov. 11: UNLV men’s basketball season opener vs. Florida A&M.

Nov. 12: Las Vegas Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon on the Strip.

Nov. 20-22: MGM Grand Event (UNLV, Utah, Rice, Ole Miss).

Nov. 23-24: Continental Tires Classic basketball tournament, Orleans Arena.

Nov. 24-25: Global Sports Classic, South Pointe.

What does that bode for the Review-journal Sports department? It means Mark Anderson is going to be really busy with the football and basketball transition (he’ll get help from Adam Hill).

It means assistant sports editor Tom Spousta will use his experience covering 20 Masters to report on the PGA Tour.

And it means Betsy Helfand will get to know bulls and runners for the second consecutive year.

It also means you’ll have a pretty robust sports report in digital and in print. Enjoy.

We found OJ in Summerlin

In case you missed it, to

Page 1A and check out Ron Kantowski’s story on how he found O.J. Simpson, who has been living in Summerlin since he was paroled on Oct. 1.

Kantowski’s search for

Simpson led our intrepid reporter right to the former NFL player’s white SUV. And Simpson was driving.

Who will be new affiliate for 51s?

Speaking of Summerlin, one of the stories Helfand will be pursuing over the next year will be the courting of a new Triple-a affiliate for the 51s.

The city’s minor-league baseball team is in an enviable position since announcing it will open a new baseball stadium on the west side.

The 51s will have their choice of suitors after the Mets announced they had bought the Syracuse Chiefs, essentially ending their agreement after next season.

We know the Nationals and the Brewers will be available affiliates. But what about the A’s leaving Nashville for Summerlin? The Padres probably wouldn’t leave El Paso, but would the Dodgers ever dump their ownership stake in Oklahoma City? Or would the Diamondbacks ever walk away from Reno?
