Strong to the Finnish: Hurricanes blitz Stars

- The Associated Press

RALEIGH, N.C. — Sebastian Aho made an early splash Monday before fellow Finn Teuvo Teravainen stole the show.

Teravainen had a natural hat trick in the third period, his first three-goal game in the NHL, to lead the Carolina Hurricanes to a 5-1 victory over the Dallas Stars.

Aho added his first goal of the season and two assists, and Jordan Staal’s career-best four assists gave him 201 with the Hurricanes. Jeff Skinner scored the other Carolina goal in the closing seconds.

Scott Darling stopped 25 shots for the win. Ben Bishop had 23 saves for the Stars.

Alexander Radulov scored for Dallas, which won the previous meeting at home 4-3 on Oct. 20. The Stars came out on top in their previous three trips to Raleigh.

Aho’s first goal came in his 14th game of the season, two earlier than last season when he finished with 24 goals.

The Hurricanes went ahead on a power play at 2:39 of the third, with Teravainen scoring on a rocket from the left point.

■ At Calgary, Alberta, Kris Versteeg scored the decisive goal with 5:31 left, capping a stretch of four goals — two by each team — in a span of 2:43.

Mark Jankowski scored twice and had an assist for Calgary, and Sam Bennett and Johnny Gaudreau each added a goal and an assist as the Flames wrapped up a 5-2 homestand.

Vladimir Tarasenko scored twice for St. Louis, and Alexander Steen and Jaden Schwartz added a goal and an assist each.

Matthew Tkachuk had two assists for Calgary.
