Falls while breaking up fight at Arbor View High

A Clark County School District police officer was injured Tuesday morning while breaking up a fight between two female students at Arbor View High School.

Two 14-year-old students began fighting around 7:40 a.m., school district police Capt. Ken Young said. The officer responding to the scene fell as he was trying to break up the fight and was taken to University Medical Centerl for observation.

By 12:30 p.m., the officer had been released and was fine, Young said.

One student was cited for creating an affray, a term meaning being involved in a public fight that disturbed the peace. The other student was arrested on charges of resisting arrest, breach of peace and two counts of battery on a school official.

“When (the officer was) trying to break up the fight, she was resistant,” Young said.

During the fight, which happened about 10 minutes before the first bell, the school went into a soft lockdown, district spokesman David Roddy said. Students were ushered into classes early. During a soft lockdown, students can move within the school but not in or out of the school, he said. The lockdown lasted about 40 minutes.

“The primary reason for the lockdown was so the officer could get the medical attention he needed,” Roddy said.
