Source: ESPN’S Boone picked to be next Yankees manager

The New York Yankees picked ESPN broadcaste­r Aaron Boone to succeed Joe Girardi as manager, a person familiar with the decision said.

Boone, 44, never has been a manager or even a coach at any level. He was a major league third baseman from 1997 to 2009 and an All-star with the Yankees in 2003.

Boone’s grandfathe­r, Ray, was a two-time All-star infielder, and his father, Bob, was a four-time All-star catcher and manager of Kansas City and Cincinnati.

■ Awards: Colorado closer Greg Holland and Kansas City third baseman Mike Moustakas were voted the Comeback Players of the Year in the National and American leagues, respective­ly, by the 30 team beat writers from Mlb.com.

■ Japan posting: MLB owners voted unanimousl­y to approve a new posting agreement with their Japanese counterpar­ts, a move that allowed bidding to start for coveted pitcher/outfielder Shohei Ohtani.

■ Blue Jays: Toronto acquired shortstop Aledmys Diaz, an All-star as a rookie in 2016, from St. Louis for minor league outfielder J.B. Woodman.

■ Cubs: Right-handed reliever Hector Rondon, one of the most accomplish­ed closers in franchise history, was not tendered a contract.

■ Mariners: Utility player Andrew Romine, claimed off waivers from Detroit on Nov. 2, agreed to a one-year contract.

■ White Sox: Free-agent catcher Welington Castillo agreed to a two-year, $15 million contract.
