Coyotes’ Rinaldo given hearing to assess punch

Zac Rinaldo was offered an inperson hearing with the NHL’S department of player safety to assess his punch to unsuspecti­ng Colorado defenseman Samuel Girard on Saturday.

Midway through the second period of the Avalanche’s 6-2 win, Rinaldo hit Avs center Nathan Mackinnon in the neutral zone. Girard responded by confrontin­g Rinaldo, who then dropped the rookie with a punch.

Rinaldo amassed 15 penalty minutes on the play.

Rinaldo, 27, has been suspended four times since his rookie season of 2011-12 for a total of 19 games. He has two goals and one assist in 31 games this season.

Oilers: X-rays on captain Connor Mcdavid’s left foot came back negative, and he isn’t expected to miss any games, coach Todd Mclellan said.
