West Virginia topples Oklahoma

NORMAN, Okla. — Finally, West Virginia looked like a Bob Huggins-coached team.

Lamont West scored 17 points, and the 19th-ranked Mountainee­rs survived a 32-point night from Oklahoma’s Trae Young to escape with a 75-73 win over the 17th-ranked Sooners on Monday.

West Virginia (18-6, 7-4 Big

12) had lost five of seven, but it found its groove by playing the solid defense it has become known for against Oklahoma (16-7, 6-5), which had averaged 97.5 points per game at home.

“That’s how we have played all year until we got into that stretch where, for whatever reason, we quit taking chances, we quit trying to make things happen with our defense,” Huggins said. “We have got to make things happen with our defense to be successful.”

Esa Ahmad and Sagaba Konate each scored 14, and Jevon Carter added 10 points, eight assists and

six steals for the Mountainee­rs, who swept the regular-season series and moved within a halfgame of conference co-leaders Next: vs. UCLA, Thursday.
