Late penalty costs Detroit four goals

NEW YORK — Down by three goals with 6½ minutes left in the third period Friday, the New York Islanders needed a break.

Tyler Bertuzzi swung his stick and gave it to them.

The Detroit left wing drew a major game misconduct for slashing, and the Islanders took full advantage by quickly scoring four times on the power play.

Brock Nelson then scored his third goal of the game 3:15 into overtime as New York, boosted by rookie Mathew Barzal’s five assists, emerged with a wild 7-6 win.

“That was a roller coaster of a game,” Barzal said.

The Islanders were down 5-2 when Bertuzzi was penalized for slashing Cal Clutterbuck with 6:33 to go in the third.

Nelson, Anders Lee, Nick Leddy and Josh Bailey scored in a 3:37 span for a 6-5 lead. The four power-play goals in the third period set a franchise record.

Bailey’s goal gave New York its first lead with 1:49 left in regulation. But Mike Green’s sixth of the season with 29 seconds to go forced overtime.

Nelson capped his second career hat trick with his 14th goal, assisted by Barzal, and sent Detroit to its third straight loss.

Barzal became the first NHL rookie to have two five-assist games in a season. It also was his third fivepoint game, making him the first rookie in 100 years to accomplish that feat. Joe Malone did it in the NHL’S first season (1917-18).

At Anaheim, Calif., Hampus Lindholm had a goal and an assist to back John Gibson, who had 30 saves while winning in his return after missing four games with a lower-body injury.

At Dallas, Tyler Seguin scored the decisive shootout goal, and Kari Lehtonen stopped all three Pittsburgh shooters in the tiebreaker as Dallas won its fifth straight.

At Winnipeg, Manitoba, Vladimir Tarasenko scored twice, with the first goal starting St. Louis’ three-goal flurry in a 7½-minute span of the second period.

At

New York, Henrik Lundqvist made 28 saves in relief of Ondrej Pavelec, who exited with a first-period knee injury, as New York halted a fourgame slide.

At Washington, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Lars Eller each had a goal and an assist for Washington in its sixth straight win over Columbus.

At Sunrise, Fla., Anze Kopitar scored his 22nd goal of the season to back Jonathan Quick, who had 35 saves, as Los Angeles won its third straight.

At Raleigh, N.C., Brett Pesce, Phil Di Giuseppe and Sebastian Aho scored in the first period to back Scott Darling, who had 22 saves.
