Petmecky guides UNLV softball team to victory

Janine Petmecky pitched a four-hit shutout with seven strikeouts to lead UNLV to a 3-0 victory over Southern Utah in the Sportco Kickoff Classic softball tournament finale Sunday at Eller Media Stadium.

Jade Yadao-valdez went 2-for2 with two RBIS and Myranda Bueno 2-for-2 with two runs for the Rebels (4-1).

Cimarron-memorial product Sarah Murphy and Taylei Williams had two hits apiece for the Thunderbir­ds (0-5).

UNLV women’s golf: At Palos Verdes, Calif., Elizabeth Prior shot 2-over-par 73 and is tied for 19th after the first round of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge. The Rebels are 16th at 22-over 306, 21 shots behind coleaders Arizona and Arizona State, in an 18-team field featuring seven squads ranked in Golf Week’s top 10.

CSN baseball: At Morse Stadium, A.J. Amelburu went 2-for-4 with two RBIS and two runs, and Matt Wong hit a threerun double to lead College of Southern Nevada (8-4) to a 7-5 win over Cochise College (0-4) in the Coyote Classic finale.

UNLV women’s tennis: At Fertitta Tennis Complex, Aiwen Zhu and Juliet Zhang each won in singles and were part of a doubles victory to help the Rebels (6-3) to a 4-0 victory over Colorado State (4-4) in their Mountain West opener.

UNLV cross country: The Rebels were named a 2017 NCAA Division I All-academic Team after the squad posted a 3.08 cumulative grade-point average. UNLV had eight athletes make the semester dean’s list, with a cumulative 3.43 GPA.

UNLV club hockey: The 11thranked Rebels, seeking their fifth straight win, face No. 16 Midland at 7 p.m. Friday at T-mobile Arena. June Jones’ Hamilton Tiger-cats staff as a defensive assistant. Glanville was 63-73 guiding the Houston Oilers and Atlanta Falcons from 1985 to 1993. He last coach at Portland State, going 9-24 from 2007 to 2009.

49ers: Linebacker Reuben Foster, 23, was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence and possessing an assault rifle, Santa Clara County authoritie­s said. Bail was set at $75,000.
