Federer punctuates return to top of rankings with 97th title
Roger Federer overpowered Grigor Dimitrov 6-2, 6-2 to win the ABN AMRO World Tournament in Rotterdam, Netherlands, for his 97th career title.
Federer, 36, extended his domination over the player once dubbed “Baby Fed” for the similarities in their playing style, registering his seventh victory in as many meetings.
The 20-time major winner will become the oldest person to hold the No. 1 position when the rankings are updated Monday. It’s been more than five years since Federer last was
No. 1 and 14 years since he first reached the top spot.
WTA: At Doha, Qatar, 16th-seeded
Petra Kvitova downed fourth-seeded Garbine Muguruza 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the Qatar Open final for her 13th straight win and second consecutive title. Kvitova, 27, who beat topranked Caroline Wozniacki in a three-set semifinal, will return to the top 10 rankings for the first time since she was the victim of a knife attack in her home in December 2016, leading to a lengthy layoff.
ATP: At Buenos Aires, Argentina, top-seeded Dominic Thiem of Austria beat Slovenia’s Alijaz Bedene 6-2, 6-4 to win the Argentina Open for the second time in three seasons. The sixth-ranked Thiem, 24, didn’t lose a set in the clay-court event en route to his ninth tour title.
ATP: At Uniondale, N.Y., top-seeded Kevin Anderson, the U.S. Open runner-up from South Africa, won the first New York Open, beating No. 2 seed Sam Querrey 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (1) in the final for his fourth tour title and first since 2015.
