Shamut, Wichita State down No. 5 Cincinnati

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. — Dave Stallworth was running the show the last time Wichita State beat a top-five team on the road. Landry Shamut took the lead as the Shockers did it again 54 years later.

This one, too, will be a reference point, given all that was at stake.

Shamut scored 19 points as No. 19 Wichita State ended the nation’s longest home-court win streak at 39 games, beating No. 5 Cincinnati 76-72 on Sunday to leave the American Athletic Conference race wide open.

The Shockers (21-5, 11-3) beat a top-five team on the road for the first time since 1964. They led most of the way, building an 11-point lead midway through the second half. Shaquille Morris’ dunk with five seconds left finished it off.

The Shockers ran onto the floor for congratulatory chest bumps. Coach Gregg Marshall got a celebratory dunking in the locker room, leaving his light-colored shirt clinging to him.

In their first home challenge of the season, the Bearcats (23-4, 12-2) wound up playing catch-up and coming up short.

At West Lafayette, Ind., Carsen Edwards scored 27 points for the Boilermakers (24-5, 13-3 Big Ten), who didn’t trail over the final 5½ minutes and halted a three-game skid. Tony Carr scored 19 points for the Nittany Lions (19-10, 9-7), who had won six of their previous seven.

At Ann Arbor, Mich., Jordan Poole scored 12 of his 15 points in the first half for the Wolverines (22-7, 11-5 Big Ten), who didn’t trail in the second half. Jae’sean Tate had 20 points and 15 rebounds for the Buckeyes (22-7, 13-3).

At Clemson, S.C., Gary Trent Jr. hit three free throws with 1:31 left to put the Blue Devils (22-5, 10-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) ahead to stay as they dealt the Tigers (20-6, 9-5) their first home loss this season.
