Ban, men’s golf team win titles in 16-team Tucson tournament

UNLV senior Shintaro Ban shot three rounds in the 60s to finish at 16-under-par 200 and win medalist honors by two strokes, leading the Rebels to victory in the 16-team National Invitation Tournament on Monday in Tucson, Arizona.

UNLV shot a tournament-low 22-under 266 in the second round after play was suspended Sunday and then shot a final-round-low 18-under 270 for a 50-under 814 total, 12 shots better than runner-up Arizona State.

Freshman Garrick Higgo finished fifth at 13-under 203, freshman Jack Trent was sixth at 12-under 204, and junior Harry Hall and sophomore Justin Kim tied for 12th at 8-under 208 in the 92-player field.

Women’s golf: At Spanish Trail Golf Club, freshman Polly Mack and sophomore Nastasia Kossacky are tied for fifth at 3-over 147 in a 71-player field, helping the Rebels to a 14-over 590 and a one-stroke lead over second-place Kennesaw State after two rounds of the 12team Rebel Beach Invitation­al.

Track and field: Najia Hudspeth, Stella Clemens, Jasmyne Graham, Mackenna Howard, Kaysha Love, Avi’tal Perteete and Destiny Smith-barnett were named to the Mountain West indoor all-conference team, and Yvonne Wade was named the league’s indoor coach of the year.

Women’s basketball: Junior center Katie Powell was named Mountain West player of the week for the third time this season after averaging 17 points and nine rebounds in helping the first-place Lady Rebels (18-9, 13-3) to two wins last week.
