Brissett leads rally for Syracuse in First Four

Freshman Oshae Brissett had a double-double and led Syracuse’s second-half comeback, and the Orange — the last team to make the NCAA Tournament — held on for a 60-56 victory over Arizona State on Wednesday at Dayton, Ohio in the First Four.

The 11th-seeded Orange plays No. 6 seed Texas Christian on Friday in Detroit in the Midwest Region. Brissett scored 23 points and had 12 rebounds.

Also, in Dayton, Ohio, Texas Southern got its first ever NCAA Tournament win, a 64-46 rout of North Carolina Central in a First Four game.

Damontrae Jefferson, a 5-foot7 guard, scored 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lift the Tigers, who will now face No. 1 seed Xavier on Friday.

Georgia: Former Ohio State coach Thad Matta withdrew from the Georgia coach search after becoming the first known candidate to interview for the job.

Matta told ESPN “I just don’t feel that I am completely ready at this point” to take the job.

Obama: Former President Barack Obama picked his NCAA Tournament brackets, and he has Michigan State winning the men’s title and — no surprises — Connecticu­t winning the women’s championsh­ip.

Michigan: Wolverines coach Jon Beilein said he believes it’s time for the school to welcome back former coach Steve Fisher. Invitation­al in Boulder City this past week. He finished second individual­ly among the 88 golfers competing with a 14-under 202, just one shot back of the individual medalist.

Alos, UNLV women’s golf senior Mackenzie Raim was named the Mountain West Women’s Golfer of the week.

The Palm Desert, California, native captured medalist honors at the Jackrabbit Invitation­al in Las Vegas this week, marking her first tournament win of her senior campaign and the third in her career. Raim carded her best three-round and single-round scores of the year, shooting a 3-under 69 in round three and a 4-under 212 for the tournament.
