Villanova’s long-range attack keys OT victory

3-point shooting by Hahn, Tucker lifts Wildcats to win

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Adrianna Hahn scored 24 points, including a key 3-pointer in overtime, to help Villanova beat South Dakota State 81-74 in the opening round of the Spokane Region.

This was the first NCAA Tournament win for the Wildcats since 2004 when they beat Mississipp­i State 66-63 in the opening round.

South Dakota State, the No. 8 seed, trailed by 12 early in the fourth quarter before rallying to tie the game on Madison Guebert’s 3-pointer from the wing just before the buzzer at the end of regulation.

With the game tied at 70 in overtime, the Wildcats hit three straight 3s — the first two by Jannah Tucker. Hahn’s 3 made it 79-70 with 55 seconds left.

Villanova (23-8) advances to play top seed Notre Dame.

Lexington Region No. 1 Louisville 74, No. 16 Boise State 42 —

At Louisville, Ky., Kylee Shook had 14 points and 10 rebounds off the bench to lead Louisville. Beginning NCAA play as a top seed for the first time in school history, the Cardinals (33-2) used quick spurts early in both halves, along with defense, to cruise over Boise State (23-10). Louisville advances to face Marquette.

At Louisville, Ky., Natisha Hiedeman scored a career-high 32 points, including 18 in the first quarter for Marquette (24-9). Erika Davenport had 16 points and 13 rebounds against the Flyers (23-7).

At Knoxville, Tenn., Rennia Davis had 18 points as Tennessee pulled away in the second half. Tennessee (25-7) plays No. 6 Oregon State in the second round.

At Knoxville, Tenn., Marie Gulich scored 21 of her 29 points in the second half and grabbed 15 rebounds for Oregon State. The 6-foot-5 Gulich finished 11 of 15 from the field, with a steady stream of layups and short jumpers highlighti­ng her second-half surge.

At Waco, Texas, Hallie Thome scored 24 points and Katelynn Flaherty added 20 for Michigan (23-9), which moves on to play Baylor. The Wolverines shot 57 percent and took advantage of their size to dominate on the boards 33-18.

At Waco, Texas, Lauren Cox had a career-high 30 points and 17 rebounds to lead four players in double figures for Baylor.

At Raleigh, N.C., Kaila Charles scored 20 points, Eleanna Christinak­i added 16 points, Kristen Confroy finished with 14 and Brianna Fraser had 11 rebounds for the Terrapins (26-7). Maryland plays North Carolina State next.

At Raleigh, N.C., Kiara Leslie scored 13 points and Aislinn Konig added 12 to help the Wolfpack (25-8) advance.

At South Bend, Ind., Arike Ogunbowale scored 30 points for Notre Dame (30-3). The Irish did suffer another injury as senior captain Kathryn Westbeld rolled her left ankle early in the game and did not return.

At College Station, Texas, freshman Chennedy

Carter scored 26 points to power Texas A&M into a second-round game versus Depaul. Khaalia Hillsman added 22 for the Aggies.

At College Station, Texas, Amarah Coleman and Kelly Campbell each scored 17 points and Depaul held off a second-half comeback by Oklahoma.

At Eugene, Ore., Kenisha Bell scored 24 of her 26 points in the second half to lead Minnesota. Destiny Pitts added 20 points for the Golden Gophers (24-8), who will play Oregon next.

At Eugene, Ore., Sabrina Ionescu had 19 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds for her 10th career triple-double to lead Oregon.

At Columbia, S.C., Dominique Toussaint hit a tie-breaking 3-pointer with 1:08 to go and Virginia held off Cal for its first NCAA win in nine years. Felicia Aiyeotan led the Cavaliers (19-13) with 16 points.

No. 2 South Carolina 63, No. 15 North Carolina A&T 52—

At Columbia, S.C., A’ja Wilson had 19 points and 16 rebounds to lead South Carolina to a victory over North Carolina A&T after the Aggies threw a serious scare into the defending national champions.
