Oregon State rides poise to upset win over Baylor

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Aggressive rebounding and timely baskets helped sixth-seeded Oregon State against No. 2 seed Baylor.

More impressive was the Beavers’ poise throughout as they handed the Lady Bears their first loss since November and earned a second Elite Eight appearance in three seasons.

Marie Gulich scored 26 points and Kat Tudor 16 for Oregon State, which shot 58 percent in the second half to upset Baylor 72-67 on Friday in a women’s NCAA Tournament Lexington Region semifinal.

Two years after upsetting Baylor (33-2) in the Dallas Region final, Oregon State (26-7) followed with a steady performanc­e to improve to 4-0 all-time against the Lady Bears while ending their 30-game win streak.

The Beavers had to withstand nine consecutiv­e points by Alexis Morris that got Baylor within 69-67 with 42 seconds left, before Katie Mcwilliams’ left-corner 3-pointer 30 seconds later provided a five-point edge.

At Lexington, Ky., Asia Durr scored 24 points for the Cardinals (35-2), who shot 52 percent and led the Cardinal (24-11) by as many as 27 points in winning their 10th straight game.

Kansas City Region No. 1 Mississipp­i State 71, No. 4 North Carolina State 57 —

At Kansas City, Mo., Teaira Mccowan had 24 points and 15 rebounds for the Bulldogs (35-1), who broke their program record for wins in a season. Kiara Leslie scored 27 points for the Wolfpack (26-9), who led early in the second quarter before being vexed by foul trouble.

At Kansas City, Mo., Jordin Canada scored 22 points for the Bruins (27-7), who advanced to a region final after falling one win short the past two seasons. Ariel Atkins scored 20 points for the Longhorns (28-7).
