Comebacker fractures left hand of Giants’ Bumgarner

-

San Francisco left-hander Madison Bumgarner was struck on his pitching hand by a line drive hit by Whit Merrifield in the third inning of the Giants’ 9-6 exhibition loss to Kansas City on Friday in Scottsdale, Arizona, and was diagnosed with a left hand fracture.

The team said Bumgarner will have surgery Saturday to insert pins in his left pinkie and is expected to miss six to eight weeks.

Bumgarner, 28, missed three months following a dirt-bike mishap last season. He entered Friday with a 2.84 ERA in five spring starts, with 27 strikeouts and three walks in 19 innings.

In other Giants news, right-hander Jeff Samardzija has a strained pectoral muscle that likely will force him to start the season on the disabled list.
