Prized prospect Kingery lands six-year contract from Phillies

The Philadelph­ia Phillies and prized prospect Scott Kingery reached a six-year contract, a major endorsemen­t for a player who has yet to reach the majors.

The deal, which guarantees Kingery more than $23 million through 2023, has three team options through 2026.

Kingery, 23, is batting .392 in 20 spring training games and is tied for the Grapefruit League lead with 20 hits. Regarded as the majors’ best second base prospect, Kingery also has seen time at third base and in the outfield this spring.

A second-round draft pick out of Arizona in 2015, Kingery hit a combined .304 with 26 home runs and 29 steals for Triple-a Lehigh Valley and Double-a Reading last season.

Angels: Touted rookie Shohei Ohtani pitched one extended inning in an intrasquad game, striking out five, walking five, hitting a batter and throwing two wild pitches while allowing two runs and two hits.

Astros: First baseman Yuli Gurriel, who underwent surgery to remove the hook of the hamate bone in his left hand Feb. 28, might not open the season on the diabled list, manager A.J. Hinch said.

Padres: Right-hander Dinelson Lamet, slated to start San Diego’s second regularsea­son game, left his start Sunday against Seattle with an elbow injury and is expected to be out until May.

Cardinals: Right-hander Adam Wainwright (left hamstring strain) will open the season on the disabled list and be replaced in St. Louis’ rotation by rookie righty Jack Flaherty.

Twins: Minnesota claimed Kennys Vargas off waivers from Cincinnati, two days after the Reds had claimed the first baseman from the Twins.

Yankees: Manager Aaron Boone said it’s too early to know if first baseman Greg Bird (right foot inflammati­on) will be sidelined Opening Day.

Indians: Left fielder Michael Brantley, recovering from offseason surgery on his right ankle, will open the season on the disabled list.

Mariners: Right-hander Felix Hernandez will start on Opening Day for Seattle for the 10th straight season, manager Scott Servais said.

Braves: Three-time All-star left-hander Scott Kazmir was released, leaving Atlanta on the hook for his remaining $15.5 million salary.

Rangers: Texas released Bartolo Colon but is interested in negotiatin­g a new deal with the 44-year-old right-hander.
