Smith, 66, to coach at seventh school: alma mater High Point

Tubby Smith agreed to take over as coach at High Point, where he played from 1969 to 1973.

It’s the seventh Division I head coaching job for Smith, 66, and his fourth since 2013. He went 40-26 in two seasons with Memphis, including 21-13 this season, but was fired two weeks ago amid dropping attendance and donations to the athletic department.

One of two coaches to lead five schools to the NCAA Tournament, Smith is 597-302 and won a national title with Kentucky in 1998. He’s also guided Tulsa, Georgia, Minnesota and Texas Tech since 1991.

Syracuse: Forward Matthew Moyer, who started 20 games this season as a redshirt freshman before an injury curtailed his playing time, said he’s transferri­ng.

Texas-arlington: Scott Cross was fired after going 225-161 in 12 seasons coaching the Mavericks, including 21-13 this season.

Utah State: Craig Smith, who went 79-55 in four seasons with South Dakota, was hired as the Aggies’ coach.

Ohio State: Forward Keita Bates-diop, the Big Ten’s player of the year, said he will enter the NBA draft.

Washington State: Junior forward

Robert Franks intends to enter the NBA draft and will hire an agent.

Detroit Mercy: Bacari Alexander was fired as coach after going 16-47 in two seasons with the Titans.

Minnesota: Forward Davonte Fitzgerald said he will transfer for his final season of eligibilit­y.

Illinois: Forward Michael Finke and guard Te’jon Lucas announced their plans to transfer.

Missouri: Freshman forward Michael Porter said he is declaring for the NBA draft.
