OF headed to minors, still owed $42.5 million

-

Arizona outfielder Yasmany Tomas cleared waivers and was assigned outright to Triple-a Reno by the Diamondbacks, who are responsible for the $42.5 million he is owed in the remaining three seasons of a $68.5 million, six-year contract.

Tomas, signed in December 2014 when Dave Stewart was Arizona’s general manager, slumped to a

.241 average with eight homers and 32 RBIS in 47 games last year, when he did not play after June 2. Sidelined by right groin tendinitis, he had core surgery on Aug. 22.

He hit .273 with nine homers and 48 RBIS in 2015, then .272 with 31 homers and 83 RBIS the following year.

Tomas is owed $10 million this year, $15.5 million in 2019 and

$17 million in 2020 as part of the contract he signed after defecting from Cuba. The 27-year-old had the choice to reject the outright assignment but doing so would have eliminated the remaining years of his contract.

Braves: Atlanta selected the contract of right-hander Anibal Sanchez from Triple-a Gwinnett and also added newly acquired catcher Carlos Perez to their 25man roster.

Atlanta signed the 34-yearold Sanchez to a minor league contract March 16. He could serve as the team’s fifth starting pitcher, possibly until left-hander Luiz Gohara recovers from a sprained left ankle.

Nationals: Catcher Matt Wieters was placed on the

10-day disabled list with a mild left oblique strain, and catcher Pedro Severino was recalled from Triple-a Syracuse.

Miguel Montero opened the season as Wieters’ top backup and is expected to see most of the starts until Wieters returns.

Astros: First baseman Yuli Gurriel was placed on the disabled list. Gurriel, who had surgery on his left hand in February, will begin a rehabilitation assignment at Double-a Corpus Christi in a few days.

Gurriel started the season on the restricted list to serve his five-game suspension for an inappropriate gesture after homering against Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish of the Dodgers in Game 3 of the World Series.

Gurriel had surgery for a broken bone in his left hand Feb. 28.
