Arenado, Perdomo suspended five games apiece for brawling

-

Colorado third baseman Nolan Arenado was suspended five games by Major League Baseball for charging the mound after San Diego right-hander Luis Perdomo threw a pitch behind his back, inciting a benches-clearing brawl Wednesday.

Perdomo also was suspended five games for intentionally throwing at the All-star third baseman.

Rockies outfielder Gerardo Parra was suspended four games for fighting.

“As of now, I think both are appealing,” Rockies manager Bud Black said. “That could change.”

Arenado and Parra were in the lineup Friday at Washington.

Padres pitcher Buddy Bauman got a onegame suspension for fighting. The suspended players also were fined.

Padres catcher A.J. Ellis and infielder Freddy Galvis and Rockies right-hander German Marquez were fined but not suspended.

Arenado swung wildly at Perdomo after he reached the mound, but none of his punches landed squarely.

The brawl came during a tense series that included three batters being hit by pitches before the benches-clearing incident. San Diego’s Manuel Margot was hit first, in the ribs, and ended up on the disabled list.

In other Padres news, right-hander Dinelson Lamet was diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and will undergo Tommy John surgery.

Braves: Right-hander Aaron Blair left his start for Triple-a Gwinnett on Wednesday because of a shoulder injury and will visit renowned surgeon Dr. James Andrews on Monday to determine the severity.

Blair, 25, a Spring Valley product and firstround draft pick of Arizona in 2013, appeared to sustain the injury while attempting to cover home plate after throwing a wild pitch.

Rays: Outfielder Johnny Field’s contract was selected from Triple-a Durham, and righthanded reliever Ryan Weber was designated for assignment.

Field, 26, a Bishop Gorman product, has batted .271 in the minors since Tampa Bay selcted him in the fifth round of the 2013 draft. He was 5-for-14 in four games with Durham this season.

Blue Jays: Third baseman Josh Donaldson (right shoulder inflammation) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, and outfielder Teoscar Hernandez was recalled from Triple-a Buffalo.

Donaldson is batting .239 with three home runs and nine RBIS in 12 games. He’s been dealing with the injury since the beginning of the season.

Manager John Gibbons said Yangervis Solarte will see most of the time at third in Donaldson’s absence.

Athletics: Catcher Bruce Maxwell pleaded guilty Friday to disorderly conduct for an incident in which he was accused of pointing a handgun at the head of a woman who delivered food to his home in Scottsdale, Arizona, in October.

Defense attorney Rhonda Neff said Maxwell pleaded to an undesignated felony, meaning the offense will go down to a misdemeanor upon successful completion of his probation.

Astros: First baseman Yuli Gurriel (left hand surgery) was activated from the disabled list, and corner infielder/outfielder J.D. Davis was optioned to Triple-a Fresno.

Gurriel was suspended for the season’s first five games for a racist gesture made to pitcher Yu Darvish in the World Series. The Cuba native went 9-for-21 in five rehabilitation games with Double-a Corpus Christi.

Nationals: Free-agent first baseman/ outfielder Mark Reynolds agreed to a one-year minor league contract with Washington that will pay him $1.5 million if he is added to the 40-man roster.

Reynolds, 34, who has batted .237 with 281 home runs and 811 RBIS in 11 major league seasons, hit .267 with 30 homers, 97 RBIS and 175 strikeouts last season with Colorado.

Cubs: Manager Joe Maddon fired back at Pittsburgh skipper Clint Hurdle for criticizing Chicago star Javier Baez’s bat flip on a popup.

Maddon was “surprised” and didn’t “really understand” why Hurdle criticized Baez’s “respect for the game.” He also said he believes “in not interfering with other groups.”

“Be careful when you start becoming hypercritical because you’re pretty much defining yourself,” Maddon said.

Twins: Minnesota’s game against the Chicago White Sox at Target Field was postponed because of rain, with wintry weather also threatening the rest of the series. No makeup date was set.

Forecasts called for snow overnight, with potential for more than a foot of accumulation throughout Saturday and Sunday.
