Women’s tennis team upended in league final

Unable to recover from losing a hotly contested doubles session, top-seeded UNLV was upset 4-2 by second-seeded Fresno State in the Mountain West women’s tennis championsh­ip final Sunday in Boise, Idaho.

The Rebels (16-6) saw their seven-match win streak end with their first loss to a league opponent in eight matches this season. The Bulldogs (12-12) earned the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Aiwen Zhu won at No. 1 singles and teamed with En-pei Huang for a 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles for UNLV, which lost the other two doubles matches 7-5 and 6-4. Anna Bogoslavet­s won at No. 4 singles for the Rebels.

Softball: At Eller Media Stadium, Jyllian Ahart hit a tworun homer in UNR’S five-run third inning to back Amanda Giel (5-2), who pitched a five-hitter, helping the Wolf Pack (20-23, 9-11) avoid a three-game Mountain West series sweep with an 8-1 victory over the Rebels (26-17, 8-10).

Baseball: At San Diego, Julian Escobedo and Chad Bible each had two hits, including an RBI double apiece in San Diego State’s three-run fourth inning, helping the Aztecs (30-14, 13-7) cap a three-game Mountain West series sweep with a 4-2 victory over the Rebels (29-17, 10-11). Formula One championsh­ip lead.

Sebastian Vettel led for much of the race but was stuck in second behind Hamilton’s Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas when a crash between the two Red Bulls brought a stoppage.

On the restart, Vettel lunged for the lead but could not keep his car on the racing line. Soon afterward, Bottas’ right-rear tire was punctured, ending his race and elevating Hamilton to first.

Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen placed second after having fallen to 14th following an early collision.

NHRA: At Concord, N.C., Steve Torrence won the Top Fuel final in the NGK Spark Plugs Fourwide Nationals at zmax Dragway for his series-best third victory of the season. Cruz Pedregon won in Funny Car, Erica Enders in Pro Stock and Jerry Savoie in Pro Stock Motorcycle.
