Cespedes on DL again for Mets

-

New York Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes spent about a week trying to play through his latest lower body injury, but the Mets placed Cespedes on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday with a strained right hip flexor, retroactive to Monday.

It will be Cespedes’ fourth DL stint for a leg injury in the past three seasons, despite an offseason focus on better caring for his lower half.

Cespedes had an MRI on Tuesday, which revealed the strain. Manager Mickey Callaway said before a 12-1 loss to Toronto that New York hoped Cespedes could heal while playing, but the problem persisted.

Cespedes is hitting .255 with eight home runs and 28 RBIS this season.

Twins: Catcher Jason Castro will miss the rest of the season following surgery to repair the meniscus in his right knee.

Castro tore his meniscus, was operated on Tuesday by Dr. Richard Steadman and had been expected to be sidelined for four to six weeks.

Castro has been on the disabled list since May 5. He hit .143 with three RBIS in 19 games and tried to play through knee pain for several weeks.

Cardinals: Struggling reliever Luke Gregerson was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a right shoulder impingement.

Gregerson has an 8.64 ERA in 12 appearances this season.

St. Louis has put four pitchers on the disabled list in the last week, with Gregerson joining starters Carlos Martinez and Adam Wainwright and reliever Tyler Lyons.

Athletics: Catcher Bruce Maxwell will miss a four-game series at Toronto that starts Thursday because he cannot enter Canada while awaiting sentencing in Arizona on a gun-related charge.

Maxwell was arrested in Arizona in October after a food delivery person alleged he pointed a gun at her at his Scottsdale home. Maxwell pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct in April and is to be sentenced June 4.
