Winslow Jr. arrested on two counts of rape

Former NFL tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. was arrested Thursday in Encinitas, California, on charges of rape and other sex crimes on the day he was to appear in court on an unrelated burglary charge.

Once the NFL’S highest-paid tight end, Winslow, 34, was charged with two counts of rape, two counts of kidnapping with intent to commit rape and single counts of forcible sodomy, oral copulation and indecent exposure. He’s free after posting $50,000 bail.

Giants: Chaparral product Will Hernandez, New York’s secondroun­d draft pick this year, lost his helmet in a skirmish with defensive tackle Damon Harrison, who used the helmet to swing at the rookie guard. Hernandez escaped injury, but left tackle Nate Solder was rolled up on during the ensuing melee and walked away with a limp.

Cardinals: General manager Steve Keim said the team plans to reward running back David Johnson, set to make a $1.8 million base salary in the final year of his rookie deal, with a more lucrative contract. Also, punter Andy Lee, 35, signed a two-year extension.

Jets: Veteran Josh Mccown will enter training camp as New York’s starting quarterbac­k, coach Todd Bowles said. Also, free-agent defensive tackle Courtney Upshaw, who spent the past two seasons with Atlanta, signed with the Jets.

Panthers: Three-time Pro Bowl linebacker Thomas Davis,

35, who in January declared this season would be the last of his 14-year career, said he is open to playing beyond 2018.

Patriots: Fullback James Develin is nearing an agreement on a two-year contract extension, and free-agent quarterbac­k Christian Hackenberg visited New England.

Browns: Kicker Ross Martin, an undrafted free agent out of Duke in 2016 who spent the past two training camps with the New York Jets, signed with Cleveland.

Texans: Linebacker Benardrick Mckinney, 25, signed a five-year, $50 million contract extension, with $21 million guaranteed, ESPN reported.

Eagles: Defensive end Chris Long was named the 2018 Good Guy Award winner by the Pro Football Writers of America. finishing 10 sprints of 110 yards during the May 29 session.

Wake Forest: Projected starting quarterbac­k Kendall Hinton, a redshirt junior with four career starts, and tight end Thomas Cole, a redshirt sophomore, were suspended for the first three games of 2018 for violating team rules, coach Dave Clawson said.
