Miller to rejoin Diamondbacks 14 months after elbow surgery
Shelby Miller is to return to the Arizona Diamondbacks’ pitching rotation Monday, 14 months after the right-hander underwent elbow ligament replacement surgery.
Miller, 27, pitched a combined 19 1/3 innings in four rehabilitation starts, two with Double-a Jackson and two with Single-a Visalia. He allowed 10 runs and 20 hits while striking out 28 and walking six.
A 15-game winner in 2013 with St. Louis and an All-star in 2015 with Atlanta, Miller was injured in his fourth start last season. He is 5-14 with a 5.78 ERA in 24 starts since the Diamondbacks acquired him from the Braves prior to 2016.
He will take the rotation spot of rookie righthander Matt Koch (5-4, 4.40 ERA), who was optioned to Triple-a Reno.
Giants: Closer Hunter Strickland apologized to his team and fans and said he’d consider anger management counseling three days after injuring his right hand punching a door in frustration after a blown save. The right-hander is expected to miss six to eight weeks with a fractured right pinkie. Also, shortstop Brandon Crawford was activated from paternity leave, and infielder
Kelby Tomlinson was optioned to Triple-a Sacramento.
Padres: Outfielder Wil Myers (left oblique strain) and right-handed reliever Phil Maton (right lat strain) were activated from the disabled list, outfielder Franmil Reyes was optioned to Triple-a El Paso, outfielder Franchy Cordero (bone spur in right elbow) was transferred to the 60-day DL, and righthanded reliever Phil Hughes (right rhomboid strain) was placed on the 10-day DL.
Mariners: Right-handed relievers Juan Nicasio (swelling in right knee) and Dan Altavilla (right elbow sprain) were placed on the 10-day disabled list, first baseman Daniel Vogelbach was recalled from Tacoma, and right-handed reliever Mike Morin’s contract was purchased from the Triple-a club.
Marlins: Right-hander Dan Straily was suspended for five games by MLB and manager Don Mattingly for one game, and both were fined undisclosed amounts, after Straily hit Buster Posey with a pitch while warnings were in place for both teams in San Francisco’s 6-3 win Tuesday.
Reds: Outfielder Scott Schebler was placed on bereavement leave, outfielder Phillip Ervin was recalled from Triple-a Louisville, left-handed reliever Kyle Crockett’s contract was purchased from Louisville, and left-handed reliever Wandy Peralta was optioned to Louisville.
White Sox: Chicago’s home game against Oakland was postponed because of rain, the majors’ 40th postponement this season — one more than last season and the most in at least the past six years. It was rescheduled as part of a straight doubleheader Friday.
Futures Game: David Ortiz will manage the World team in the 20th All-star Futures Game on July 15 in Washington, D.C., and Torii Hunter will lead the U.S. team, which leads the series 12-7.
Angels: Left-hander Tyler Skaggs (tight right hamstring) was scratched from his scheduled start Thursday, and outfielder Michael Hermosillo was recalled from Triple-a Salt Lake.
Orioles: Colby Rasmus (left hip flexor strain) was activated from the disabled list, and fellow outfielder Joey Rickard, a Bishop Gorman product, was optioned to Triple-a Norfolk.
Yankees: Luis Cessa (left oblique strain) was activated from the disabled list, and fellow right-handed reliever A.J. Cole (neck strain) was placed on the 10-day DL.
Cardinals: Michael Wacha (left oblique strain) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, and fellow right-hander John Gant was recalled from Triple-a Memphis.
Rockies: Right-handed reliever Yency Almonte was recalled from Albuquerque, and infielder Ryan Mcmahon was optioned to the Triple-a club.
