Astros SS Correa to go on DL with back injury
Houston shortstop Carlos Correa will be placed on the disabled list Friday because of a stiff back that has kept him out of the Astros’ lineup for the past three games.
Correa, 23, is hitting .268 with 13 home runs and 49 RBIS in 73 games and recently had a streak of 70 errorless games. A corresponding move to fill Houston’s roster will be made Friday, with corner infielder J.D. Davis likely to be recalled from Triple-a Fresno.
Also, Yuli Gurriel was placed on paternity leave, and fellow first baseman A.J. Reed was recalled from Fresno.
Tigers: Chris Bosio said he was fired as pitching coach for using the word “monkey” but insists he didn’t say it in a racial or demeaning context. Bosio told USA Today he used the word while talking about pitcher Daniel Stumpf, who is white. Bosio said Stumpf is nicknamed “Spider Monkey” because of the faces he makes while lifting weights. Bosio said an African-american clubhouse attendant overheard the conversation. Bosio told USA Today that “the kid thought we were talking about him. He got all upset.” Bosio said he plans to hire an attorney to help determine whether to sue for wrongful termination.
Angels: Shohei Ohtani’s right elbow injury has healed enough so he can begin a hitting program immediately, but he has not been cleared to pitch. Placed on the disabled list with an ulnar collateral ligament sprain on June 8, Ohtani will be re-evaluated by doctors in three weeks, general manager Billy Eppler said.
Also, Jake Jewell (right fibula fracture) was placed on the 10day disabled list, fellow righthanded relievers Taylor Cole and Eduardo Paredes were recalled from Salt Lake, and infielder
Nolan Fontana was optioned to the Triple-a club.
Cubs: Right-hander Yu Darvish (right triceps tendinitis) experienced pain during a bullpen session and will return to Chicago to be re-evaluated. Also, righthanded reliever Carl Edwards Jr. (inflamed right shoulder) will pitch a rehabilitation game Friday with Triple-a Iowa and could be activated soon afterward.
Right-hander Tyler Chatwood was activated from paternity leave, and right-handed reliever Dillon Maples was optioned to Triple-a Iowa.
Braves: Right-hander
Brandon Mccarthy (right knee tendinitis) was placed on the 10day disabled list, left fielder Ronald Acuna (left knee sprain, lower back contusion) was activated from the DL, Matt Wisler was recalled from Gwinnett, and fellow right-hander Wes Parsons was optioned to the Triple-a club.
Orioles: Right-hander Yefry Ramirez and catcher Chance Sisco were recalled from Norfolk, and left-handed reliever Donnie Hart and catcher Austin Wynns were optioned to the Triple-a club.
Dodgers: Right-handed reliever Josh Fields (inflamed right shoulder) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, and right-hander Walker Buehler (rib microfracture) was activated from the DL.
Marlins: Right-handed reliever Nick Wittgren was optioned to Triple-a New Orleans to open a roster spot for righthander Sandy Alcantara, who will be promoted to start Friday.
Royals: Outfielder Jorge Bonifacio was reinstated after serving an 80-suspension for performance-enhancing drugs, and infielder Ryan Goins was designated for assignment.
Brewers: Left-handed reliever Mike Zagurski’s contract was purchased from Triple-a Colorado Springs.
