Darvish seeks second opinion on sore arm; return uncertain
Chicago Cubs right-hander Yu Darvish went to Texas to get another opinion on the sore triceps muscle that flared up again in a bullpen session. The setback ended plans for Darvish to rejoin Chicago’s rotation Saturday, and there is no timetable for his return, manager Joe Maddon said.
Darvish, 31, consulted Dr.
Keith Meister, an orthopedic surgeon who is one of the Texas Rangers’ team physicians. He determined Darvish had a right elbow impingement. Darvish broke into the majors with the Rangers in 2012 and pitched for them until he was traded to the Dodgers in July 2017.
Yankees: Right-hander Masahiro Tanaka threw 48 pitches over three innings in his first simulated game since being sidelined three weeks ago by strained hamstrings. Facing minor leaguers at New York’s spring complex in Tampa, Florida, Tanaka struck out four in the hitless outing. His next step could be a minor league rehabilitation game next week. Also, utility player Brandon Drury was recalled from
Triple-a Scranton/wilkes-barre.
Blue Jays: Right-handed reliever Roberto Osuna will return to his role as closer when he is eligible to return from suspension on Aug. 5, general manager Ross Atkins said. Osuna’s next court date for his assault case is July 9. Also, utility player Darnell Sweeney’s contract was purchased from
Triple-a Buffalo.
Marlins: Right-hander Pablo Lopez,
22, is expected to be recalled from Triple-a
New Orleans to make his major league debut Saturday. He has a 1.44 ERA, 66 strikeouts and 12 walks over 62 1/3 innings across 12 starts at two minor league levels this season.
Twins: Utility player Taylor Motter was placed on the seven-day concussion disabled list, catcher Willians Astudillo’s contract was purchased from Triple-a Rochester, and right-hander Felix Jorge was designated for assignment.
Orioles: The contracts of left-hander Paul Fry and right-hander Ryan Meisinger were purchased from Norfolk, and right-handers Yefry Ramirez and Jimmy Yacabonis were optioned to the Triple-a club.
Red Sox: Infielder Tzu-wei Lin was optioned to Triple-a Pawtucket to clear roster space for first baseman/outfielder Steve Pearce, who was acquired Thursday from Toronto.
Pirates: Right-hander Chad Kuhl (right forearm strain) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, and utility player Max Moroff was recalled from Triple-a Indianapolis.
Cardinals: Left-handed reliever Tyler Webb was claimed off waivers from San Diego, and right-hander Alex Reyes (right lat tear) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.
Astros: Shortstop Carlos Correa (sore lower back) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, and left-hander Cionel Perez was recalled from Double-a Corpus Christi.
Diamondbacks: Utility player Christian Walker was recalled from Reno, and righthanded reliever Jimmie Sherfy was optioned to the Triple-a club.
