Sagan outsprints field, takes Tour de France yellow jersey

-

Three-time defending world champion Peter Sagan took the overall lead of the Tour de France after he beat about a dozen other sprinters to win Stage 2 in La Roche-sur-yon, France.

The Slovakian rider’s ninth career win at the Tour came just over a year since he was disqualified from cycling’s most prestigious event by race officials who ruled he had caused a crash that broke Mark Cavendish’s shoulder.

Defending champion Chris Froome, who fell into a ditch near the end of Saturday’s Stage 1, arrived safely with most of the peloton.

Indycar: At Newton, Iowa, James Hinchcliffe passed Josef Newgarden with just over 40 laps left to win at the Iowa Speedway, his first victory of the season.

Formula One: At Silverstone, England, Sebastian Vettel defeated second-place Lewis Hamilton to win the British GP in front of a partisan Hamilton crowd and extended his lead in the Formula One championship standings to eight points after 10 of 21 races.

NHRA: At Epping, N.H., Matt Hagan won his second straight Funny Car race at the

NHRA New England Nationals.

Steve Torrence (Top Fuel) and Chris Mcgaha (Pro Stock) were also winners in their respective categories at the 13th of 24 events this season.

USA baseball: At Macon, Ga., UNLV shortstop Bryson Stott hit a two-run home run, helping the USA Baseball Collegiate National team defeat Japan 7-6 and clinch the series win at Luther Williams Field.

Stott, who also went to Desert Oasis High School, hit .365 with 32 RBIS and 30 doubles as a freshman at UNLV last season.
