Dodgers outfielder Puig going on DL with right oblique sprain

-

The Dodgers placed right fielder Yasiel Puig on the 10-day disabled list with a right oblique sprain before Monday’s game against the Padres.

Puig, who is hitting .265 with 11 home runs, was removed from Sunday’s loss to the Angels during a fifth-inning at-bat.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Puig might not return until August.

“It’s going to be a few weeks,” Roberts said. “With the time we have left in the season, we have to be very careful. Otherwise it can come back to bite you at an important time. So we are going to be patient.”

Andrew Toles, who was out for two months with a hamstring injury, was recalled from Triple-a Oklahoma City. He was batting .326 in 34 games in the minors.

Nationals: Catcher Matt Wieters was activated from the 10-day disabled list.

He had been on the disabled list since

May 11 and had surgery on a strained left hamstring. Before his injury, he had hit .232 with three home runs and seven RBIS in 23 games.

Mets: Third baseman Todd Frazier was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a strained muscle in his left rib cage. It’s the second DL stint for Frazier since joining the struggling Mets.

The 32-year-old slugger had never been on the disabled list before 2018.

A two-time All-star, Frazier signed a $17 million, two-year contract with the Mets as a free agent in February. He is batting .217 with 10 homers, 32 RBIS and a .685 OPS in 61 games.

Also, right-hander Drew Gagnon will be called up from Triple-a Las Vegas to start Tuesday against the Phillies, his major league debut. The 28-year-old Gagnon, who was in the Mets’ clubhouse Monday, is 1-4 with a 4.67 ERA in 17 starts at Las Vegas.

Royals: Kaito Yuki, a 16-year-old pitcher, is headed to the Kansas City organization instead of attending high school in Japan.

Yuki agreed to a minor league contract with a $322,500 signing bonus. He is believed to be the youngest player from Japan to sign with a big league team.

“I wanted to play in the United States as soon as possible, rather than playing high school ball,” Yuki said in a statement.

Yuki is listed at 6-foot-2, 170 pounds, and the right-hander’s fastball has been clocked at 88 mph.

Astros: Shortstop Carlos Correa (back stiffness) took ground balls Monday in a small step toward his return to the field. Manager A.J. Hinch said it’s still too soon to tell if he’ll come off the disabled list before the All-star break.

Twins: Right-hander Ervin Santana is scheduled to start Tuesday for Double-a Chattanooga as he tries to work his way back to the Minnesota rotation after being on the 60-day disabled list following finger surgery.

Manager Paul Molitor said Santana is likely to move his rehab to Triple-a Rochester for one start before the All-star break, and the team will decide on his future depending on the two starts.
