Orioles takes no chances, pull trade bait Machado after rain

-

Orioles All-star shortstop Manny Machado was taken out of the game in the fifth inning Sunday by manager Buck Showalter after a 26-minute rain delay. The move was designed to get their star player off a sloppy field, because the last-place Orioles are entertaining offers for Machado before the July 31 nonwaiver trade deadline.

Machado homered earlier in the Orioles’ 6-5 win over the Rangers.

“Obviously there’s a different situation going on with Manny. You all know that,” Showalter said. “… A month ago he wouldn’t have come out of the game. We know that. You know it.”

Machado has spent his entire career in Baltimore, but his contract expires after this season, and the Orioles don’t appear interested in locking him up with a long-term deal.

Red Sox: Left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez went on the 10-day disabled list with a sprained right ankle after a collision in Saturday’s game against the Blue Jays.

“There’s some serious damage in the ankle, no surgery required,” manager Alex Cora said. “He’s going to have a boot for two weeks, and we’ll evaluate to see where he’s at. No surgery, that sounds promising.”

The collision also sent Blue Jays infielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. on the seven-day concussion DL.

Blue Jays: Center fielder Kevin Pillar was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a sternoclavicular joint injury suffered while making a diving catch and rolling over Saturday against Boston.
