German wins Stage 9; contender crashes out

-

John Degenkolb of Germany won a three-man sprint to claim the action-packed, cobblestoned Stage 9 of the Tour de France on Sunday in Roubaix, France. Overall contender Richie Porte crashed out of the race, and favorite Chris Froome overcame a tumble.

Yellow jersey holder Greg Van Avermaet crossed second and increased his overall lead to 43 seconds on Geraint Thomas. Monday is a rest day.

Porte suffered a fractured right clavicle in a crash and is out of the Tour.

Froome, the four-time champion, crossed in the main pack, 27 seconds behind, overcoming a crash with 28 miles to go that saw him go over the top of teammate Gianni Moscon.

Froome moved up to eighth overall, 1:42 behind Van Avermaet, who is not a threat in the mountains.

NHL: Retired goaltender Ray Emery, who won the Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2013, drowned in a swimming accident in his hometown of Hamilton, Ontario. He was 35.

Emery played parts of 11 seasons with the Ottawa Senators, Philadelphia Flyers, Blackhawks and Anaheim Ducks.

Motor sports: At Toronto, Scott Dixon won the Indycar race at Toronto for the third time.

The New Zealand native finished the 85-lap course on the streets surrounding Exhibition Place first, with Simon Pagenaud of France second. Robert Wickens was third, marking the third year in a row a Canadian made the podium.
