Seattle manager Servais gets multiyear contract extension

The Seattle Mariners gave manager Scott Servais a multiyear contract extension, with the club in position to end the longest current playoff drought in the four major pro sports.

The Mariners entered Friday at 58-39 and holding the American League’s second wild-card spot.

Servais, 51, is in his third season as Seattle’s manager, his first managerial job after stints in the front office with Texas and the Los Angeles Angels. He’s 222-199 with the Mariners.

Padres: Shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr., 19, ranked the majors’ No. 9 prospect by Baseball America, is expected to miss the rest of the season with a fractured left thumb sustained Thursday with Double-a San Antonio. He has batted .286 with 16 home runs, 43 RBIS and 16 steals in 88 games. Also, right-handed relievers Colten Brewer and Robert Stock were recalled from Triple-a El Paso.

Tigers: Right-hander Michael Fulmer (left oblique strain) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, center fielder Leonys Martin (left hamstring strain) was activated from the DL, right-hander

Victor Alcantara was recalled from Toledo, and outfielder Mikie Mahtook was optioned to the Triple-a club.

Mets: Outfielder Yoenis Cespedes (right hip flexor strain) was activated from the disabled list, right-hander Drew Smith was recalled from the 51s, and first baseman/outfielder Dominic Smith and right-hander Corey Oswalt were optioned to the Triple-a club.

Nationals: Right-hander Stephen Strasburg (inflamed right shoulder) and first baseman Ryan Zimmerman (right oblique strain) were activated from the disabled list, and right-handed relievers Wander Suero and Trevor Gott were optioned to Triple-a Syracuse.

Braves: All-star second baseman Ozzie Albies (tight right hamstring) is expected to miss a couple of games after an early exit from Atlanta’s win at Washington, manager Brian Snitker said.

Pirates: Utility player Sean Rodriguez (right quad strain) was activated from the disabled list, and right-hander Tanner Anderson was optioned to Triple-a Indianapol­is.

Rays: Catcher Adam Moore’s contract was purchased from Triple-a Durham, and outfielder Johnny Field — a Bishop Gorman product — was designated for assignment.

Rangers: Nomar Mazara (right thumb sprain) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, and fellow outfielder Willie Calhoun was recalled from Triple-a Round Rock.

Reds: Scott Schebler (right shoulder sprain) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, and fellow outfielder Phillip Ervin was recalled from Triple-a Louisville.

Orioles: Right-hander Chris Tillman was designated for assignment, and corner infielder Renato Nunez’s contract was selected from Triple-a Norfolk.

Giants: First baseman Brandon Belt was placed on paternity leave, and infielder Ryder Jones was recalled from Triple-a Sacramento.

Royals: Adalberto Mondesi was placed on family medical emergency leave, and fellow infielder Ramon Torres was recalled from Triple-a Omaha.

Brewers: Catcher Manny Pina (left biceps tendinitis) was activated from the disabled list.
