Mets’ Syndergaard back on DL with hand, foot, mouth disease

-

New York Mets right-hander Noah Syndergaard is headed back to the 10-day disabled list after contracting hand, foot and mouth disease.

The team believes Syndergaard caught the contagious virus when he made an appearance at a baseball camp for children during the All-star break. Manager Mickey Callaway said it probably explains why Syndergaard weakened and his velocity decreased during Friday’s win at Yankee Stadium.

Syndergaard returned from the DL on July 13 after sitting out more than six weeks with a strained ligament in his right index finger. Callaway and assistant general manager

John Ricco said it’s possible Syndergaard will miss only one turn in the rotation.

Dodgers: Third baseman Justin Turner went 1-for-2 with an RBI double in Los Angeles’ win at Milwaukee in his first start since the All-star break but was removed with right groin tightness, which might land him back on the disabled list, manager Dave Roberts said. Turner had been sidelined before Sunday with what the club called an upper right leg muscle injury.

Cardinals: Right-hander Daniel Poncedeleon will make his major league debut Monday at Cincinnati. The 26-year-old underwent surgery in 2017 to relieve pressure around his brain after he was hit in the head by a line drive while pitching for Triple-a Memphis. He is 9-3 with a 2.15

ERA with the Redbirds this season, with 103 strikeouts in 92 innings.

Royals: Kansas City acquired outfielder Brian Goodwin from Washington for minor league right-handed reliever Jacob CondraBogan. Goodwin, 27, hit .200 with three home runs and 12 RBIS in 48 games for the Nationals this season. Condra-bogan, 23, has a 3.00

ERA over 27 innings at two Class-a levels this season, with 40 strikeouts and three walks.

Blue Jays: Left-hander J.A. Happ joined Houston ace Justin Verlander as the lone major leaguers to strike out nine and walk none on four occasions this season. Also, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was activated from the concussion disabled list, and fellow infielder Richard Urena was optioned to Triple-a Buffalo.

Rangers: Right fielder Joey Gallo, a

Bishop Gorman product, exited Texas’ win over Cleveland in the eighth inning after landing on first base awkwardly while running out a grounder and spraining his left ankle.

Phillies: Edubray Ramos (left patella tendon strain) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, and fellow right-handed reliever Luis Garcia (right wrist strain) was activated from the DL.

Angels: Jim Johnson (back strain) was activated from the disabled list, and fellow right-handed reliever Taylor Cole — a Bishop Gorman product — was optioned to Triple-a Salt Lake.

Brewers: Left-hander Brent Suter (tight left forearm) was removed after his start after three innings and is headed to the disabled list, manager Craig Counsell said.

Orioles: Right-hander Andrew Cashner (neck strain) was activated from the disabled list, and left-handed reliever Donnie Hart was optioned to Triple-a Norfolk.

Rockies: Antonio Senzatela (finger blister) was activated from the disabled list, and fellow right-hander German Marquez was placed on paternity leave.

Mariners: Mike Zunino (left ankle contusion) was activated from the disabled list, and fellow catcher David Freitas was optioned to Triple-a Tacoma.

Rays: Middle infielder Willy Adames was recalled from Durham, and outfielder Justin Williams was optioned to the Triple-a club.

Padres: Utility player Cory Spangenberg was recalled from El Paso, and catcher Rafael Lopez was optioned to the Triple-a club.
