Rays put All-star lefty Snell on DL with shoulder fatigue

-

The Tampa Bay Rays put All-star left-hander Blake Snell on the 10-day disabled list with fatigue in his throwing shoulder.

Snell, 25, pitched 1 2/3 innings in the All-star game on July 17, five days after his most recent start for the Rays.

Snell had an MRI examination Monday that showed no structural issues. The team is hopeful Snell will miss just one start.

“I think it’ll be quick, I honestly do,” said Snell, who is 12-5 with a 2.27 ERA in 20 starts. He is tied for second in the American League in wins, third in ERA and eighth in strikeouts with 134 in 119 innings.

Dodgers: Third baseman Justin Turner (right groin strain) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, and outfielder Alex Verdugo was recalled from Triple-a Oklahoma City. Newly acquired shortstop Manny Machado, who has won two Gold Gloves at third base, will play third in Turner’s absence, with Chris Taylor playing shortstop, manager Dave Roberts said.

Angels: First baseman Albert Pujols (inflamed left knee) was activated from the disabled list, Jaime Barria was recalled from Salt Lake, fellow right-hander Deck Mcguire was optioned to the Triple-a club, and right-handed reliever Oliver Drake was designated for assignment.

Brewers: Left-hander Brent Suter was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow and will undergo Tommy John surgery, and righthanded reliever Jorge Lopez was recalled from Triple-a Colorado Springs.

Padres: Right-handed reliever Colten Brewer (left oblique strain) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, left-hander Joey Lucchesi was recalled from El Paso, and right-handed reliever Kazuhisa Makita was optioned to the Triple-a club.

Pirates: Right-handed reliever Casey Sadler’s contract was purchased from Indianapolis, utility player Max Moroff was optioned to the Triple-a club, and left-handed reliever Josh Smoker was designated for assignment.

Mets: Outfielder Yoenis Cespedes had an MRI examination and was examined by a specialist in an effort to determine whether he needs surgery on both feet that would sideline him for eight to 10 months.

Phillies: Right-hander Zach Eflin (finger blister) was activated from the disabled list, and right-handed reliever Mark Leiter and outfielder Aaron Altherr were optioned to Triple-a Lehigh Valley.

Cardinals: Second baseman Kolten Wong (inflamed left knee) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, and right-hander Daniel Poncedeleon was recalled from Triple-a Memphis.

Braves: All-star second baseman Ozzie Albies (tight right hamstring), who has missed Atlanta’s past two games, is expected to be held out until Thursday.
