Braves fortify bullpen, trade for Baltimore reliever Brach
The Atlanta Braves obtained right-handed reliever Brad Brach from the Baltimore Orioles for $250,000 of international signing bonus allotment.
Brach, 32, who is eligible for free agency after the World Series, is two years removed from making the American League All-star team, has 11 saves this season and has worked as Baltimore’s closer for long stretches over the past two years. But he has a 10.80 ERA in eight games this month, and lefthanders are batting .342 against him. He has a 2.99 ERA in five seasons with the Orioles.
Blue Jays: Rookie Lourdes Gurriel Jr. extended his Toronto record of consecutive multihit games to 11 in the Blue Jays’ 7-4 win at Chicago before exiting in the ninth inning with a left knee contusion and a left ankle sprain. Gurriel has batted .500 (25-for-50) during the streak, which ties Tony Perez in 1973 for the majors’ longest such run in the past 50 years.
White Sox: Chicago acquired left-handed reliever Caleb Frare from the New
York Yankees for $1.5 million in international signing bonus pool allocation. Frare, 25, is 4-1 with a 0.81 ERA and 58 strikeouts over 44 2/3 innings at Double- and Triple-a this season.
Phillies: Cesar Hernandez’s pinch-hit double in the eighth inning of Philadelphia’s 4-0 loss at Cincinnati extended the Phillies’ streak of consecutive games with an extra-base hit to 101, tying the 2000 team for the secondlongest run in franchise history.
Yankees: Gleyber Torres and Miguel Andujar on Saturday became the first New York rookies to hit cleanup in the starting lineup of consecutive games since Bill Robinson and Steve Whitaker in a doubleheader at Chicago on Aug. 22, 1967.
Athletics: Utility player Chad Pinder (left elbow laceration) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, and middle infielder Franklin Barreto was recalled from Triple-a Nashville.
Red Sox: Third baseman Rafael Devers (left hamstring strain) was placed on the 10day disabled list, and infielder Tzu-wei Lin was recalled from Triple-a Pawtucket.
