Marlins pitcher Urena hit with six-game ban
Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Urena was suspended six games and fined an undisclosed amount by Major League Baseball for intentionally hitting Ronald Acuna Jr. of the Atlanta Braves with a pitch.
The right-hander hit Acuna on the left elbow with his first pitch Wednesday in the Marlins’ 5-2 loss at Atlanta. Acuna, 20, went into the game having homered in five straight games, including four home runs in the three games against Miami — three of them leading off.
Urena, 25, is 3-12 with a 4.74 ERA in 24 starts. Unless appealed, the suspension is to begin Friday. Braves first-base coach Eric Young also was suspended one game and fined.
Acuna was back in Atlanta’s lineup Thursday after a CT scan on his elbow was normal and X-rays were negative.
Dodgers: Outfielder Yasiel Puig was suspended for two games and fined an undisclosed amount by MLB for fighting and inciting a benches-clearing incident Tuesday against San Francisco. Giants catcher Nick Hundley also was fined for his role in the fracas.
Rays: Outfielder Tommy Pham (fractured right foot), a Durango product, was activated from the disabled list, and righthander Jake Faria was optioned to Triple-a Durham. Pham had three hits, including a home run, in his lone rehabilitation game with Class-a Hudson Valley on Wednesday.
Pirates: Shortstop Jordy Mercer (left calf strain) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, outfielder Jordan Luplow was recalled from Triple-a Indianapolis, infielder Kevin Newman’s contract was purchased from Indianapolis, catcher Jacob Stallings was optioned to Indianapolis, and right-handed reliever Casey
