Michigan State thwarts upset bid by Utah State

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Connor Heyward scored his second touchdownw­ithtwominu­teslefttop­ut No. 11 Michigan State ahead, and the Spartans held on to beat Utah State 38-31 on Friday.

Brian Lewerke passed for 287 yards and two TDS for Michigan State (1-0), which trailed until the second quarter, built a 13-point lead late in the third and fell behind late.

Jordan Love passed for 319 yards with two intercepti­ons, and Darwin Thompson scored two go-ahead touchdowns for the Aggies (0-1).

At Madison, Wis., Jonathan Taylor ran for 145 yards on 18 carries, including touchdowns of 47 and 30 yards, for the Badgers (1-0), who led 24-0 at halftime. The Hilltopper­s (0-1) punted on their first six possession­s.

No. 4 Wisconsin 34, Western Kentucky 3 — MOUNTAIN WEST UNR 72, Portland State 19 —

At Reno, Mclane Mannix had four catches for 132 yards and three touchdowns for the Wolf Pack (1-0), who had five TDS of at least 40 yards, including Daniel Brown’s 42-yard intercepti­on return and Romeo Doubs’ 80-yard punt return. The Vikings (0-1) trailed 30-19 at halftime.

PAC-12 No. 13 Stanford 31, San Diego State 10 —

At Stanford, Calif., JJ Arcega-whiteside had six catches for 226 yards, including touchdowns from 38, 19 and 80 yards, for the Cardinal (1-0). The Aztecs (0-1) held Bryce Love to 29 yards on 18 carries.

At Denver, Steven Montez was 22 of 25 passing for 338 yards and four TDS for the Buffaloes (1-0). The Rams (0-2) trailed 28-10 at halftime.

Colorado 45, Colorado State 13— ATLANTIC COAST Syracuse 55, Western Michigan 42 —

At Kalamazoo, Mich., Eric Dungey ran for 200 yards and passed for 184, hitting Jamal Custis with six passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns for the Orange (1-0), who built a 34-7 lead. D’wayne Esrkidge had eight catches for 248 yards and two TDS for the Broncos (0-1).

At Durham, N.C., Daniel Jones was 13 of 17 passing for 197 yards and a touchdown and scored on a 1-yard run for the Blue Devils (1-0), who atoned for their 21-16 setback to the Black Knights (0-1) in November.
