Athletics 6, Yankees 3 — At Oakland, Calif., Mark Canha homered to back Trevor Cahill (6-3), who defeated New York — the lone AL team he hadn’t beaten — for the first time in seven career appearance­s and improved to 5-0 with a 1.09 ERA in nine home starts. Oakland pulled within 3½ games of the Yankees for the first AL wild card.

Angels 3, Rangers 1 — At Arlington, Texas, Matt Shoemaker pitched five scoreless innings in his first start for Los Angeles since March 31, and Taylor Ward’s tworun homer in the Angels’ three-run seventh helped fellow rookie Taylor Cole (1-2), a Bishop Gorman product, notch his first major league win.

Astros 4, Twins 1 — At Houston, Alex Bregman homered for the third straight game, and Yuli Gurriel also went deep to back Dallas Keuchel (11-10), who allowed one unearned run over six innings, as Houston won its third straight.

Royals 5, Indians 1 — At Cleveland, Ryan O’hearn homered twice to back Jakob Junis (8-12), who allowed two hits and no walks and struck out six over seven shutout innings, as Kansas City won its season-high sixth in a row.

White Sox 4, Tigers 2 — At Chicago, Matt Davidson hit a walk-off two-run homer in the ninth after Daniel Palka opened the inning with a tying blast off closer Shane Greene (2-6). Victor Martinez hit a go-ahead home run off Jace Fry (2-2) in the top of the ninth off.

Rays 7, Blue Jays 1 — At Toronto, Durango product Tommy Pham reached base three times, Joey Wendle had three hits, and Ji-man Choi homered for Tampa Bay, which roughed up Marcus Stroman (4-9) for four runs over 1 2/3 in his return from the disabled list.

Mets 4, Dodgers 2 — At Los Angeles, pinch hitter Brandon Nimmo belted a go-ahead three-run homer in the ninth to snap New York’s 12game skid against Los Angeles, which fell a half-game behind Colorado atop the NL West. Jacob degrom held the Dodgers to one run over six innings and drove in a run.

Brewers4,cubs3— At Milwaukee, Christian Yelich drove in the winning run with the bases loaded in the ninth by beating a throw from third to avoid a double play as Milwaukee pulled within four games of Chicago atop the NL Central. Third baseman Kris Bryant fielded Yelich’s grounder, stepped on third and threw to first too late.

Rockies 9, Giants 8 — At Denver, pinch hitter Noel Cuevas delivered a go-ahead two-run single in the eighth for Colorado, which rallied after squanderin­g a five-run lead. Trevor Story homered twice off San Francisco ace Madison Bumgarner, and the Giants got consecutiv­e pinch homers from Alen Hanson and Chris Shaw in the eighth.

— Zack Godley (14-8) to back Bryan Mitchell (1-3), who allowed one run on two hits over five innings in his first outing since returning from the disabled list.

Nationals 4, Cardinals 3 — At Washington, Bryce Harper hit a tying two-run homer to center in the ninth off Bud Norris and delivered a walkoff sacrifice fly in the 10th off fellow College of Southern Nevada product Chasen Shreve (3-3).

Marlins 3, Phillies 1 — At Miami, Jose Urena (5-12) held Philadelph­ia to one run on four hits and struck out seven over seven innings, and Rafael Ortega hit a two-run single in Miami’s three-run second as the Phillies lost their third straight.

Pirates 5, Reds 1 — At Pittsburgh, Adam Frazier’s four hits included a home run off Matt Harvey (6-8), a double and a two-run single, backing Trevor Williams (12-9), who pitched 6 2/3 shutout innings.

Red Sox 8, Braves 2 — At Atlanta, Ian Kinsler drove in three runs, and Atlanta mustered one run after loading the bases in the first, fourth and seventh innings, as Boston won a matchup of division leaders and improved to 23-4 in its past 27 games against NL teams.
