Astros 3, Tigers 2 — At

Detroit, Justin Verlander (15-9) allowed two runs on six hits and struck out 10 over seven innings in his first game at Comerica Park since being traded to Houston in August 2017. Verlander improved to 98-50 at the stadium; Max Scherzer is second in career wins there with 46.

Yankees 7, Twins 2 — At Minneapoli­s, Gary Sanchez’s three hits included a 460-foot home run to back J.A. Happ (16-6), who allowed six hits over six shutout innings in New York’s ninth straight win over Minnesota. The Yankees pulled three games ahead of Oakland for the first AL wild card.

Rangers 5, Angels 2 — At Anaheim, Calif., Bishop Gorman product Joey Gallo went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIS, and Ronald Guzman hit a two-run homer in a four-run second for Texas, which halted its four-game skid and Los Angeles’ four-game win streak. Gorman product Taylor Cole pitched four perfect innings of relief for the Angels.

Royals 4, White Sox 3 — At Kansas City, Mo., reliever Jeanmar Gomez threw away a bunt in the 10th, lifting Kansas City. Whit Merrifield homered on Chicago starter Lucas Giolito’s first pitch, and Ryan O’hearn homered in the sixth to tie it for the Royals. the NL West. German Marquez (12-9) held the Diamondbac­ks to one earned run over seven innings and struck out 11, his third straight double-digit strikeout effort.

Brewers 3, Cubs 2 — At Chicago, Lorenzo Cain had four hits for Milwaukee, which notched the decisive run when Mike Moustakas scored on Carl Edwards Jr.’s wild pitch in the sixth, and the Brewers pulled within one game of Chicago atop the NL Central. Josh Hader struck out six straight batters in relief for Milwaukee.

Braves 4, Giants 1 — At San Francisco, Ozzie Albies had a triple, a double, an RBI and two runs to back Sean Newcomb (12-8), who allowed one run on three hits and no walks and struck out eight over six innings. Atlanta moved five games ahead of Philadelph­ia atop the NL East and dealt San Francisco its ninth loss in a row.

Cardinals 8, Pirates 7 — At

St. Louis, Matt Adams hit a threerun homer in the eighth to rally St. Louis, which overcame deficits of 4-0 and 6-4 to move two games ahead of Los Angeles for the second NL wild card. Josh Harrison, Colin Moran and Starling Marte homered for Pittsburgh, which had won five straight.

Reds 10, Dodgers 6 — At Cincinnati, Scooter Gennett had four hits and three RBIS, and Joey Votto added a two-run double on his 35th birthday for Cincinnati, which improved to 5-0 against Los Angeles this season. Alex Wood (8-7) was lit up for six earned runs over 3⅔ innings.
