Nebraska believes QB hit was dirty

Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez is day-to-day with a right knee injury, and it might be close to game time Saturday until it is known if he can play against Troy.

Martinez was hurt with about four minutes left in the Cornhuskers’ 33-28 loss to Colorado. Coach Scott Frost wouldn’t disclose details about the injury Monday other than saying Martinez didn’t sustain ligament damage.

Nebraska sent video of the play on which Martinez was injured to conference officials for review. Frost said his sideline view of the play made him suspect the injury occurred in a tackle pile.

Outside linebacker Jacob Callier made the initial hit. Frost wouldn’t say who he thought injured Martinez.

Sophomore walk-on Andrew Bunch will have his practice repetitions increased this week in case he’s needed to start Saturday.

Senior running back Rodney Smith will miss the rest of the season because of an injury to his left knee, removing the most accomplished player from an inexperienced offense.

Smith was hurt Saturday on the third play of the Gophers’ win over Fresno State.

Coach P.J. Fleck said the university will request a medical redshirt and a sixth year of eligibility for Smith, who already has his undergraduate degree.

Seventh in program history with 2,959 rushing yards, Smith also was the team’s primary kickoff returner.

Running back Rodney Anderson, a preseason AllBig 12 pick, will miss the rest of the season with a right knee injury, the school said.

Anderson, who didn’t start until the middle of last season but ran for 1,161 yards and 13 touchdowns and caught five TD passes in 2017, was hurt Saturday late in the first quarter of the Sooners’ win over UCLA.

Left tackle Andrew Thomas, a sophomore regarded as the No. 3 Bulldogs’ best offensive lineman, was held out of practice after leaving Georgia’s win over South Carolina on Saturday with a left ankle sprain.

Coach Kirby Smart said he is unsure if Thomas, who has started 17 straight games, will play this week against Middle Tennessee

State. Freshman Cade Mays replaced Thomas in the third quarter Saturday.

Quarterback Kyle Kempt’s status is day-to-day after he sustained an injury to the MCL in his left knee in the fourth quarter of the Cyclones’ loss to Iowa on Saturday, coach Matt Campbell said.

Sophomore Zeb Noland, who was 4 of 10 passing for 43 yards against the Hawkeyes, would start this week against No. 5 Oklahoma is Kempt can’t play, Campbell said.
