Georgia athlete dismissed after reports of racist taunts

Georgia first baseman Adam Sasser was kicked off the baseball team amid allegation­s he shouted racist remarks at Bulldogs quarterbac­k Justin Fields during Saturday’s Tennessee-georgia football game.

The university released a one-sentence announceme­nt of Sasser’s dismissal that provided no details. The Atlanta JournalCon­stitution said the racial taunts were reported by three students sitting near Sasser in the stands.

Sasser, a junior from Evans, Georgia, who batted .317 and had 10 home runs last year, issued an apology on Twitter, saying, “I totally understand why my actions were offensive and I am deeply sorry for any pain or distress this has caused anyone.”

Texas Tech: Red Raiders freshman quarterbac­k Alan Bowman was released from a hospital four days after sustaining a partially collapsed lung against West Virginia.

Coach Kliff Kingsbury hasn’t offered a timetable for Bowman’s return, but has said he didn’t expect an extended absence because Bowman, the nation’s leading passer going into the game, didn’t have any broken ribs.

Tennessee State: The mother of the Tennessee State linebacker who collapsed on the sideline during a game said her son has had some body movement that she calls “baby steps” as he remains in critical condition.

Staci Abercrombi­e said at a news conference that the family is asking for prayers as they hope for a full recovery for her son, Christion.

The linebacker went to the sideline during the first half of the Tigers’ loss to Vanderbilt on Saturday in Nashville, Tennessee. He told trainers he had a headache, then required oxygen on the sideline before being taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with a head injury for emergency surgery.

Clemson: C.J. Fuller, a former running back who was part of the Tigers’ 2016 national championsh­ip team, has died. He was 22. The cause of death was not revealed.

Announcer: Former NFL star and Detroit Lions executive Matt Millen is stepping away from his Big Ten TV analyst job for the rest of this season to focus on his health. The 60-year-old Millen has been seeking a heart transplant.
