Men’s, women’s soccer teams bow to Spartans

Alex Clewis stopped a penalty kick by Timo Mehlich in the 72nd minute, preserving San Jose State’s 2-1 victory over UNLV in a Western Athletic Conference men’s soccer match Sunday in San Jose, California.

Suliman Khorami scored the goahead goal in the 50th minute for the Spartans (5-5-2, 3-1-1), who held a 20-12 advantage in shots. Daniel Moran scored his fourth goal of the season in the 34th minute for the Rebels (6-7-1, 1-3-1) to back Enrique Adame, who had eight saves.

Women’s soccer: At Johann Memorial Field, Haleigh Wynne scored in the 61st minute to lift San Jose State (6-5-2, 5-1 Mountain West) to a 1-0 win over the Rebels (8-5-2, 2-3-1). Freshman Emberly Sevilla had a career-best 10 saves for UNLV, which was outshot 15-5.

Swimming and diving: At

Los Angeles, Filio Raftopoulo­u was part of the Rebels’ winning 300yard medley and freestyle relays, and Casey Mceuen, JP Pitrowski, Hayden Hemmens and Sean Gage swam on the Rebels’ winning 200 and 300 freestyle relays Saturday in the USC Invite.

The 30-year-old former Oklahoma State player beat

UNLV product Ryan Moore on the par-4 10th after Brandt Snedeker dropped out on their first extra trip down the par-5 18th.

Tway birdied the final two holes in regulation for a 1-under-par 71 and then birdied all three playoff holes. Moore (67) birdied three of the last four.

European PGA: Atst. Andrews, Scotland, Lucas Bjerregaar­d of Denmark closed with a 5-under 67 for a 15-under 273 total and a one-shot win in the Dunhill Links Championsh­ip that denied runner-up Tyrrell Hatton (72) his third straight title.

LPGA: At Incheon, South Korea, top-seeded South Korea

(15 points) held off challenges from the United States (11) and England (11) to win the eightnatio­n Internatio­nal Crown for the first time.
