Kovalchuk, Iafallo lift Kings past Red Wings

Ilya Kovalchuk got his 400th NHL assist, his first point since his return, to help the Los Angeles Kings defeat the Detroit Red Wings 4-2 on Sunday.

Alex Iafallo had two goals for the Kings in support of Jack Campbell, who made 36 saves in place of injured Jonathan Quick.

Kovalchuk had two assists for first multipoint game since April 25, 2013, for New Jersey, Anze Kopitar scored for the second straight game, and

Paul Ladue also scored for the Kings. Anthony Mantha and Dylan Larkin each scored on the power play for Detroit.

At Chicago, Morgan Rielly scored 19 seconds into overtime and had two assists to back Garret Sparks, who is from the Chicago suburb of Elmhurst and made 25 saves to win in his first NHL game since 2016.

Auston Matthews had two goals and two assists and Kasperi Kapanen a goal and an assist for Toronto, which spoiled the Blackhawks’ home opener.
