EX-WNBA star to coach Hornets’ G League team

Chasity Melvin was hired by the Charlotte Hornets’ G League team, the Greensboro Swarm, as an assistant coach, becoming the first female coach in franchise history.

A 12-year WNBA veteran and an All-star in 2001, Melvin’s hire came one day after Kristi Toliver became the first active WNBA player to become an NBA assistant when she joined the Washington Wizards.

Motor sports: At Kansas City, Kan., Joey Logano earned pole position for Sunday’s Hollywood Casino 400 with a 191.646-mph lap at Kansas Speedway in the final race before the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoff field is cut from 12 to eight. Kyle Busch qualified seventh and Kurt Busch 11th.

UNLV women’s soccer: At Fort Collins, Colo., Georgia Kingman, Caitlyn Kreutz and Mckenna Sullivan scored in the second half to back freshman Emberly Sevilla, who had four saves in her sixth shutout, leading the Rebels (10-5-3, 4-3-2 Mountain West) to a 3-0 win over Colorado State (5-8-4, 2-5-1).

NHL: Arizona Coyotes center Christian Dvorak, 22, is sidelined indefinite­ly after having surgery Friday to repair a torn pectoral muscle sustained last week during a rehabilita­tion skate for an unrelated injury.
