Panthers edge Capitals for first win of season

WASHINGTON — Jonathan Huberdeau had a goal, two assists and the shootout winner as the Florida Panthers recovered after giving up a three-goal lead in the second period and beat the Washington Capitals 6-5 on Friday for their first victory of the season.

Florida coughed up a 4-1 edge and allowed the tying goal to Nicklas Backstrom with 1:25 left in regulation. The Panthers didn’t score in overtime despite a power play but celebrated a win for the first time this season in their fifth game after Huberdeau beat Pheonix Copley in the fourth round of the shootout.

Vincent Trocheck also had a goal and two assists and scored in the shootout for the Panthers.

Florida backup goaltender Michael Hutchinson stopped 10 of the 11 shots he faced in regulation and overtime and made a couple of more saves in the shootout after replacing starter James Reimer.

The Panthers chased Washington goalie Braden Holtby with four goals on 11 shots.

Wild 3, Stars 1 — At Dallas, Ryan Suter scored the go-ahead goal in the third period and had two assists to back Devan Dubnyk, who had 33 saves.

Jason Spezza opened the scoring 36 seconds into the third period with his first goal of the season for Dallas, which got 33 saves from Ben Bishop.

The Stars didn’t put their first shot on goal until 11:21 of the first period but held a 24-13 shooting edge in the second.

Predators 5, Flames 3 — At Calgary, Alberta, Kevin Fiala and Filip Forsberg each had a goal and an assist, and Zac Rinaldo scored the tiebreakin­g goal in the third period for Nashville, which won its fourth straight.

Elias Lindholm scored his team-best fifth goal for Calgary, which fell behind four times and caught up three times.

Pekka Rinne had 15 saves on 18 shots before leaving with 15 minutes left for the Predators, and Juuse Saros stopped all nine shots he faced in relief.

Matthew Tkachuk and Sam Bennett scored to back Mike Smith, who had 25 saves.
