Mcginn, Hurricanes edge Sharks in shootout

RALEIGH, N.C. — Brock Mcginn scored in regulation and had the lone shootout goal in the Carolina Hurricanes’ 4-3 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Friday.

Carolina outshot San Jose

23-6 from start of the second period to the midpoint of the third and finished with a 41-23 edge. It was the first time the Sharks had been outshot this season.

Mcginn, Teuvo Teravainen and Dougie Hamilton scored for the Hurricanes in the second period, and Teravainen assisted on Hamilton’s goal. Antti Suomela, Timo Meier and Tomas Hertl scored for San Jose.

Petr Mrazek made 20 saves for Carolina, and Aaron Dell stopped 38 shots for the Sharks.

Jets 2, Red Wings 1 — Detroit, defenseman Dustin Byfuglien notched his 500th career point when he scored the go-ahead goal with 6:45 left, backing Laurent Brossoit, who had 27 saves, as Winnipeg won for the fourth time in five games.

Andreas Athanasiou scored in the first period, and Jimmy Howard stopped 38 shots for Detroit, which welcomed back defenseman Mike Green, who made his season debut after recovering from a virus that attacked his liver.

Kyle Connor, a native of nearby Shelby Township, tied the score at 1 with a power-play goal with 3:46 left in the second period.

Avalanche 6, Senators 3 — At Denver, Gabriel Landeskog broke a tie with 13:46 left as part of Colorado’s four-goal third period, helping the Avs overcome a two-goal performanc­e from Matt Duchene in his return to Denver.

Landeskog, Nathan Mackinnon and Mikko Rantanen — Colorado’s top line — totaled 10 points, with Rantanen notching three assists.

Philipp Grubauer had 21 saves in his first home game for the Avs. Craig Anderson stopped 31 shots for Ottawa, which led 2-0.
