Powell one of 20 on watch list for national basketball award

UNLV senior Katie Powell is one of 20 players named to the watch list for the 2019 Lisa Leslie Award, which recognizes the top center in women’s basketball.

The 6-foot-4-inch Atlanta native averaged 15.5 points per game last season and ranked second in the Mountain West in rebounding with an average of 8.7 per game in league play.

The watch list will be narrowed to 10 in February and to five in March.

Women’s soccer: At Reno, Kaila

Brinkman tallied the go-ahead goal in the 34th minute, 14 seconds after UNR had scored to forge a tie, lifting the Rebels to a 2-1 Mountain West victory. UNLV (11-6-3, 5-4-2), which benefited from an own-goal by the Wolf Pack (4-13-2, 1-10) in the third minute, held an 1810 edge in shots.

Men’s soccer: At Johann Memorial Field, Klint Parker had two goals and an assist, and Tucker Bone also scored twice to lead No. 18-ranked Air Force to a 5-2 win over the Rebels. Daniel Moran and Timo Mehlich scored for UNLV (9-8-1, 4-4-1 Western Athletic Conference), which matched the Falcons (15-2, 8-1) with seven shots on goal.

Cross country: At San Diego, led by Elisa Rovere’s 68th-place finish in 23 minutes, 37 seconds, the Rebels placed last in the 6-kilometer, 11-team Mountain West Championsh­ips. New Mexico won the title for the 11th straight season.

Swimming: Freshman Filio Raftopoulo­u was named Mountain West swimmer of the week after winning two individual events and anchoring a winning relay in the Rebels’ victory over Cal Baptist.
