Strong to the Finnish: Laine lifts Jets

HELSINKI — Finland native Patrik Laine had a hat trick as the Winnipeg Jets took a 4-2 victory over the Florida Panthers in a regular-season game in the Finnish capital Thursday.

Laine scored in the second period and twice in the third, including an empty-netter, for the Jets, who opened the back-to-back series between the teams in front of a roaring sellout crowd of 13,500 at Hartwall Arena.

Mathieu Perreault scored the Jets’ first goal, and defenseman Dustin Byfuglien had three assists. The Panthers, who held a 38-36 edge in shots, tied the score twice on goals by Keith Yandle and Evgenii Dadonov.

Florida captain Aleksander Barkov, also a native of Finland, assisted on Perreault’s opener.

The game was the 24th played in Europe during the regular season and the sixth in Finland.

At New York, Josh Bailey scored a short-handed goal in the second period and the lone

shootout goal to back Thomas Greiss, who had 29 saves, as New York moved to 5-0-0 against the Metro.

At Anaheim, Calif., Mats Zuccarello and Mika Zibanejad scored in the shootout to back Alexandar Georgiev, who had 22 saves through overtime and two in the shootout.

At Calgary, Alberta, Mark Giordano had a goal and two assists for Calgary, which overcame a 4-1 deficit with a five-goal third period and won its third straight.

At Montreal, Max Domi scored the tiebreakin­g goal with 21 seconds left, and 18-year-old Jesperi Kotkaniemi scored his first two NHL goals for Montreal.

At San Jose, Calif., Nick Foligno scored twice, and Anthony Duclair had a goal and two assists to back Sergei Bobrovsky, who stopped 44 shots.

At Detroit, Justin Abdelkader and Trevor Daley each scored a short-handed goal in the third period for Detroit, which won its third in a row.

At Los Angeles, Oskar Lindblom had a goal and an assist for Philadelph­ia, which won a second straight for the first time this season.

At Toronto, Tyler Seguin assisted on goals by Jamie Benn and Devin Shore to back Anton Khudobin, who had 30 saves.
