Buckeyes’ Meyer vehemently denies coach used racial slur against athlete
Ohio State is pushing back after Stadium college football reporter Brett Mcmurphy alleged that a player transferred after former receivers coach Zach Smith yelled a racial epithet at him.
The piece, appearing under the headline, “The Search for the Truth About Trevon Grimes’ Transfer from Ohio State to Florida,” also accused head coach Urban Meyer of covering up the incident.
Meyer fired back Tuesday, saying: “Quite honestly, it is the most preposterous thing I have ever heard since I’ve been involved in college athletics.”
Mcmurphy’s report is based on a quote from Grimes’ father, Lebron.
Several Buckeyes receivers tweeted about the allegations Tuesday, saying the reported incident did not take place.
“This isn’t true at all,” wide receiver Johnnie Dixon tweeted.
Wrote wide receiver Parris Campbell: “There’s no way that anyone would believe this. NO WAY. This lie is just out of hand. I was present during the entire altercation and what’s said in this article NEVER HAPPENED. I can guarantee it.”
Austin Mack, another receiver, tweeted: “Wow … so you really think a room filled with Black athletes would still be apart of this University if any racial slurs were used to degrade another Black man!! Every one of us Wide Outs we’re right there and saw the whole thing.”
Mcmurphy is the former ESPN reporter whose reports about Smith’s abuse of ex-wife Courtney led to Smith’s firing and, ultimately, a threegame suspension for Meyer.
“Last week, we were made aware … that there was a story from this reporter that was going to be printed,” Meyer said. “The administration acted — we were getting ready for the Michigan State game — aggressively. They got involved immediately with it.”
