Three first-timers selected as WNBA All-star reserves

Chicago guard Diamond Deshields, Indiana guard Erica Wheeler and Minnesota guard Odyssey Sims will make their WNBA All

Star Game debuts after they were selected as reserves Monday for the July 27 game at Mandalay Bay Events Center.

Other reserves selected were: Phoenix forward Dewanna Bonner, New York forward Tina Charles, Indiana forward Candice Dupree, Minnesota forward Sylvia Fowles, Los Angeles forward Nneka Ogwumike, Chicago guards Allie Quigley and Courtney Vandersloo­t, Connecticu­t forward Alyssa Thomas and Washington guard Kristi Toliver.

Captains Elena Delle Donne of Washington and A’ja Wilson of Las Vegas will choose their teams from the eight other starters and then the 12 reserves.

76ers: Guard Ben Simmons agreed to a $170 million, five-year maximum contract extension, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press. The 22-year-old former No. 1 overall draft pick has averaged 16.4 points, 8.5 rebounds and 7.9 assists per game in his two seasons.

Cavaliers: Shooting guard J.R. Smith was released by Cleveland before his $15.6 million contract for next season became guaranteed. this season, striking out 130 and walking 34 in 119 innings.

Dodgers: Infielder/outfielder Chris Taylor was placed on the 10-day injured list with a fractured left forearm. He is batting .261 with eight homers and 41 RBIS this season.

Red Sox: Infielder Eduardo Nunez was designated for assignment, likely ending his tenure with Boston.

Royals: Kansas City plans to extend the netting at Kauffman Stadium after a young fan was struck by a ball Sunday.
