Brit again wins breaststroke title; Ledecky out with illness
Adam Peaty of Great Britain became the first man to win a third 100-meter breaststroke title at the world swimming championships. Peaty claimed the title in 57.14 seconds in Gwangju, South Korea, a night after he set a world record in the semifinals, becoming the first to break 57 seconds.
American Caleb Dressel won his ninth career world title, taking the 50 butterfly. On the women’s side, Katinka Hosszu of Hungary (200 individual medley) and Canada’s Margaret Macneil (100 butterfly) won gold.
After getting upset in the 400 freestyle Sunday, American star Katie Ledecky, a fivetime Olympic gold medalist, withdrew from the 200-meter freestyle preliminaries and the 1,500-meter final because of illness. Ledecky’s lone remaining individual event is the 800 free, and the preliminary heats are on Friday.
Also, FINA, swimming’s governing body, sent a warning letter to Australia’s Mack Horton after he refused to stand on the podium after finishing second to China’s Sun Yang in the 400 freestyle. Horton said he is angry that Sun, who served a three-month doping suspension in 2014, is being allowed to compete before he faces a Court of Arbitration for Sport hearing in September that could potentially end his career.
Boxing: Keith Thurman will need to have an X-ray to rule out a fracture of his right hand if he wants to return to competition before Jan. 17, according to a list of medical suspensions released Monday by the Nevada Athletic Commission.
Thurman, who dropped a split decision to
Manny Pacquiao in a WBA welterweight title bout Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden, headlined the list. Pacquiao is medically suspended until Aug. 20 with no contact allowed until Aug. 11. Thurman has a minimum suspension until Sept. 4 with no contact allowed until Aug. 20.
The commission issues a list of medical suspensions after each fight card in Nevada. At least one fighter from each of the 11 bouts on the card received some sort of temporary ban.
Boxing: The California State Commission voted unanimously to lift the suspension of Kubrat Pulev of Bulgaria, who kissed reporter Jenny Ravalo without her consent during a postfight interview in March. He completed a sexual harassment course and paid a $2,500 fine.
College football: UNLV senior Javin
White was named to the Butkus Award watch list, an honor that goes to the nation’s top linebacker. He made 74 tackles last season, including 6½ for loss and two sacks.
NHL: The Calgary Flames have a tentative agreement for a new arena to replace the Saddledome, which is almost 36 years old.
